Gretchen Andrew: Painting the Algorithmic Gaze

What does a beauty algorithm see when it looks at a human body, and what becomes visible when an artist commands a robot to paint that judgment? Gretchen Andrew’s Facetune Portraits stage an encounter between traditional portraiture and robotic mark-making on canvas. By turning seamless acts of beauty enhancements into unsettling physical interventions, Andrew creates a tension on her paintings. In doing so, her work reveals how contemporary beauty culture is encoded into technology and reproduced through it.

Andrew's creative process begins with an image of a person, which gets processed through a beauty application to be automatically enhanced based on the corrections suggested by the algorithm. She then prepares a canvas with a white underpainting, using impasto, a technique in which thick layers of paint create texture on the surface. Using a machine developed by Matr Labs that can produce oil paintings from digital images, she prints the original, unedited photograph onto the prepared canvas. The resulting wet painting is then placed beneath an XY-axis drawing robot, a machine capable of holding different artistic tools and executing lines according to a set of instructions.
To guide the robot, Andrew translates the modifications generated by the beauty application into a set of commands and under her artistic direction, it draws precise white lines onto the wet surface. This execution marks the difference between the original image and its algorithmically edited version.
The resulting painting presents a person rendered beautifully on canvas, whose proportions and features are then pulled, enlarged, narrowed, and distorted by the robotic marks. In this way, the algorithm’s judgment is no longer hidden behind a screen; it becomes materially present on the canvas.

I first encountered several early works from the Facetune Portraits series in person at Galerie Vossen in Paris. Among them were a self-portrait by Andrew, a family portrait, and several works based on images of Berlin-based influencers. The paintings were visually distinct and brought together people of different races and genders, shown in different poses and settings.
As I moved closer, my attention shifted from the painted figures to the white lines drawn by the robot, which resembled scars. What had initially appeared visually composed became increasingly unsettling. Eyes were enlarged, jaws sharpened, lips and breasts made fuller, and bodies pulled toward different proportions. These marks showed the disagreement between how the figures appeared and how the application suggested they should look. The intervention felt almost like a violation, and I remember laughing, not at the figures or at the violence of the alterations, but at the sudden clarity and absurdity of what the paintings revealed. A process that usually remains smooth, private, and almost invisible had been exposed through these artworks.
This encounter made me question further how contemporary beauty ideals are accelerated through AI systems, and how oppressive power structures do not disappear but change form.
What happens when the male gaze appears as an algorithmic gaze?
Rosalind Gill’s work on postfeminist media culture helps answer this question. Gill examines how women are encouraged to present themselves in particular ways while these choices are framed as free and personal. She questions whether practices such as plastic surgery and beauty filtering can truly be understood as individual preferences when women’s bodies become increasingly similar through them.
Presented as forms of empowerment, these practices tend to produce a supposedly “ideal” body or face, characterized by hairless skin, slim waists, and larger hips and breasts, features that continue to align with dominant male fantasies. Promoted through twenty-first-century neoliberal ideals such as self-improvement and self-determination, women are encouraged to reshape their bodies according to standards of femininity constructed by media and marketing. AI-powered beauty applications intensify this process by translating those norms into personalized suggestions for enhancement, making them easier to internalize without appearing as external demands.
Decisions that are presented as freely chosen and deeply personal repeatedly lead toward the same body  
Andrew makes this homogenization visible in Facetune Portraits: Universal Beauty (2025), a series based on images of Miss Universe contestants from different national and cultural backgrounds, all of whom have already been selected according to conventional standards of physical beauty. Andrew puts these images through the same technical and artistic process.
The resulting paintings show contestants on the runway, posing for the jury. Each appears in a distinct outfit, sometimes a custom-made evening gown and at other times a bikini, chosen to complement individual features and, in some cases, reflect cultural or national identity. This emphasis on individuality is reinforced through differences in color, pose, gesture, and texture, as Andrew uses brushes and palette knives to decide what to bring forward in each portrait. Yet this uniqueness is disrupted by the white marks left by the robot. Across the series, the algorithm proposes remarkably similar adjustments: longer legs, narrower waists, fuller hips and breasts, and altered lips and eyes.

Andrew notes that, in some instances, the algorithm also alters elements beyond the body, including the contestants’ gowns. In the case of Miss Guinea, it attempted to distort the dress by smudging the excess fabric extending beyond the body. Andrew chose to preserve this alteration rather than correct it for visual coherence. In the portrait of Miss Pakistan, who wore a gown rather than a bikini for cultural reasons, the application attempted to accentuate her body through the fabric, making her features more visible and sexualized.
These examples suggest that the algorithm subordinates racial and cultural differences to a single idealized figure. By applying similar corrections across distinct subjects, it flattens individual features and pulls the contestants toward a shared silhouette. Differences remain visible in clothing, pose, and cultural presentation, yet the body is subjected to the same corrective logic in each case. Universal Beauty therefore reveals how beauty applications standardize women’s bodies even within a competition presented as a celebration of international diversity.

What happens when a robot materializes an algorithmic judgment?
Andrew’s artworks integrate both traditional painting and a collaboration with an XY-drawing robot. This coexistence creates a dynamic where traditional portraiture aims to capture likeness between the subject and the portrait, while the robot moves beyond resemblance and disrupts that likeness. Andrew calls these works “portraitures of tension” or “on-canvas battles.” This dual engagement allows the real appearance of a person and its algorithmically altered version to remain visible within a single work.
Yet why does the artist choose to work with a robot, when these same marks could equally have been drawn by her own hand? Here, the robot's role in translating computational decisions into physical marks acts as a bodily extension of the application itself. Rather than merely representing algorithmic modifications, the robot materially reenacts them, making the technological intervention physically present in the production of the portrait. If Andrew had painted these marks herself, they might have remained expressive artistic gestures. By delegating them to the robot, however, she renders the automated, procedural, and material nature of these interventions more explicit, prompting questions about where agency lies and whose decisions are ultimately being inscribed onto the represented body. At the same time, her artistic direction remains central: her choice of brush, speed, and pressure determines how each robotic line enters the painting.
As a result, these marks disrupt the underlying oil painting and render visible the corrective interventions that beauty applications would normally conceal within a smooth, enhanced result.

Through this process, the portraits generate a distinct form of visual ambiguity: as Andrew notes, viewers often find it difficult to tell whether the figure in the painting is a real person or an AI-generated image.  
At first glance, these figures appear to be AI-generated images that fail to look fully authentic. Yet the opposite is true: they are based on real people, reflecting the extent to which real bodies increasingly resemble AI-generated figures.
Andrew refers to this phenomenon as the reverse “uncanny valley.” While the uncanny valley usually refers to the psychological discomfort produced when something artificial comes close to human likeness without fully achieving it, its reversal suggests a growing tendency for real bodies to increasingly resemble artificial or AI-generated aesthetics. This phenomenon points to a broader concern: beauty ideals are no longer merely social and cultural aspirations but are increasingly becoming computational standards. Through beauty applications, bodies and faces are read as data that can be analyzed, measured, and optimized according to algorithmic norms. Andrew stresses that eventually, this process diminishes the characteristics that make each of us unique, distinct, and ultimately human.

Final reflections
In Facetune Portraits, Gretchen Andrew challenges our perspective on a normalized practice within contemporary culture and translates it into an embodied and affective experience on canvas. She exposes the symbolic violence embedded within these technologies, whereby algorithmic systems continuously mark the body as something in need of correction. In doing so, Andrew opens up a critical discussion on how AI systems transform the production, circulation, and internalization of beauty norms, since beauty modifications can be performed in seconds, repeated indefinitely, accessed at little cost, and circulated to millions of users, dramatically expanding the scale and reach of algorithmic beauty standards. Ultimately, the tension Andrew creates between traditional oil painting and robotic marks generated through algorithmic commands reveals a profound shift in beauty culture: AI-powered technologies now act as increasingly seamless and difficult-to-detect intermediaries in shaping women’s relationships with their bodies, their self-perceptions, and their beauty practices.
