Synthtic Youth - Takenoko Zoku (025) by Emi Kusano, a collaborative video work with Sora, sinpired by the ephemeral Takenoko-zoku fashion tribe of 1980s Harajuku.
In the early 1980s, the Takenoko-zoku emerged briefly in Harajuku, Tokyo. Dressed vividly, these youths danced spontaneously in pedestrian zones, leaving a striking yet fleeting impression before vanishing. Here, the artist reconstructs this ephemeral culture—one never personally experienced—using generative AI trained solely on Western datasets, creating music and visuals that never existed, evoking nostalgia and questioning the transient nature of youth and fashion.
