Glitch in the Garden of Whispers

Participating Artists: Ana María Caballero, Nicole L’Huillier

At Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin, Glitch in the Garden of Whispers frames the gallery as a speculative garden where human and machinic interpretations co-exist. Curated by Dr. Clara Meister for the Berlin Galleries Association (LVBG), the exhibition extends the association’s annual conference “KI und Kunst(Markt)” into a sensorial space for reflection. Here, “seeds” function as both textual prompts and algorithmic parameters, activating narratives that branch, glitch and recombine across languages, codes and bodies.

Ana María Caballero presents the complete twelve-part iteration of Being Borges (2023), shown together in physical space for the first time. The transdisciplinary series reimagines Jorge Luis Borges and Margarita Guerrero’s The Book of Imaginary Beings through AI-generated images that respond to the original Spanish text, its canonical English translation, and Caballero’s own interpretive rewritings. By holding these three voices against one another, the work makes visible how AI systems “read” language differently across linguistic contexts, surfacing biases and asymmetries in large-scale datasets. Each creature appears alongside Ana María’s poems, creating a layered intertext that nods to lineages such as Alicia Ostriker’s Demeter to Persephone while insisting on a contemporary, post-photographic register.

In dialogue, Nicole L’Huillier contributes works grounded in sound, resonance and more-than-human forms of listening, expanding the exhibition’s inquiry into how perception is mediated by both instrumentation and imagination. Together, Ana María Caballero and Nicole L’Huillier propose AI not as neutral tool but as a highly situated collaborator whose translations, glitches and hallucinations can be re-routed toward poetic and critical ends.

On 23 February, Ana María Caballero returns to Berlin to perform a live, performative reading of Being Borges as part of the LVBG conference program, closing the day with an embodied traversal of this multilingual, multimodal garden.
