NEMO European Museum Conference 2026: Human after all – Museums in the wake of AI

The NEMO European Museum Conference 2026, Human after all – Museums in the wake of AI, gathers museum professionals from across Europe to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping museum work, opening with a keynote by AI ethicist and political philosopher Annette Zimmermann and continuing through panels and workshops on AI strategy, bias, and cybersecurity in museums.

Organized by NEMO, the Network of European Museum Organisations, together with the Lithuanian Museums Association and the National Museum of Lithuania, the conference runs at the Palace of the Grand Dukes with a reception at the Museum of Applied Art and Design and a closing reception at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.The programme includes sessions on museums as democratic infrastructures, AI bias and misinformation, cybersecurity, and how AI is changing museum work from within, with speakers including Merete Sanderhoff of the National Gallery of Denmark, Oonagh Murphy of Goldsmiths London, and Christine Koblitz of Wien Museum. Workshops cover generative AI experiments with museum collections, co-writing an AI manifesto for museums, and a live demonstration of a phishing attack. A related side event on 14 October, organized around NEMO's ECHOES project, addresses the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage.
