Curated by Marco De Mutiis, the Digital Sector of Paris Photo brings together galleries, platforms and special projects on how digital technologies, from social media to photorealistic AI, change the photographic image, with artists including Alkan Avcıoğlu, Sarah Friend, Solienne, Evelyn Bencicova and Vincent Fournier.
"Our vision is augmented, extended and challenged by machines; photographic images have become sites of collaboration and conflict between humans and non-humans. Many contemporary photographers and artists explore the photographic image and its transformations under digital and networked conditions, revealing in turn how these conditions shape our perception and our understanding of authorship and mediation. Their practices question and expand the field of photography, foregrounding the medium’s experimental potential by reinventing formats, materials and techniques that push the image into uncharted territory." Marco De Mutiis, Digital Curator at Fotomuseum Winterthur, who takes over the sector in its fourth edition from Nina Roehrs.
AUTOMATA from Berlin shows works by Sarah Friend, Mika Ben Amar and Solienne, among others. Alkan Avcıoğlu is presented by Heft from New York, Vincent Fournier by Au Cube, Evelyn Bencicova by ARTEMIS from Lisbon, and Alejandro Cartagena and Diana López by carmen araujo arte from Caracas. byGRIDA brings around twenty artists, among them Han Sungpil and Justin Aversano.
This year's edition of Paris Photo marks the bicentenary of photography, with 246 exhibitors from 38 countries across five sectors under the glass roof of the Grand Palais: Main, Voices, Digital, Emergence and Book.
